Copying text out of a PDF gives you a mess: a line break at the end of every line, words split by hyphens, headings indistinguishable from body text and tables collapsed into a jumble of numbers. The S-PDF PDF to Markdown converter reads the structure of the page instead and writes a clean .md file. Headings become #, ## and ###, paragraphs are re-joined into whole sentences, lists become Markdown lists and tables become pipe tables.

Markdown is plain text with just enough structure to be readable by people and programs alike. That makes it a natural format for notes apps like Obsidian and Notion, documentation sites, README files in Git repositories, and for handing a long document to an AI assistant without the noise of a raw PDF.

How to convert PDF to Markdown in 3 steps

  1. Add your PDF Choose one or several PDFs, or drop them onto the page. Scanned documents need OCR PDF first so there is text to convert.
  2. Convert to Markdown Start the conversion. Headings, paragraphs, lists and tables are detected and written as Markdown, with a --- rule between pages.
  3. Download the .md file Open it in any text editor, notes app or IDE. Several PDFs arrive as one ZIP, and each .md file can also be downloaded on its own.

Why use S-PDF for PDF to Markdown

  • Headings from font sizesLarger text becomes #, ## or ### headings, so the outline of the document carries over.
  • Whole paragraphsLines are re-joined across line breaks and hyphenated words are put back together.
  • Lists and tablesBullet and numbered lists become Markdown lists, and tables become pipe tables.
  • Emphasis keptShort bold lines, such as labels and sub-headings, are written as **bold**.
  • Page boundaries markedA horizontal rule (---) separates each PDF page, so you can still find your place.
  • Plain text, small filesThe output is a lightweight .md text file that works in any editor and is easy to version.

What the Markdown looks like

In the PDFIn the Markdown file
Large title, section and sub-section text# Title, ## Section, ### Sub-section
Body text broken over many linesOne paragraph per paragraph, with hyphenated words re-joined
Bullet points and numbered steps- item and 1. item
TablesPipe tables: | Name | Price |
Short bold lines**Bold text**
Page breaksA horizontal rule: ---
Images, photos, chartsNot included; the output is text only

Because images are left out, a picture-heavy brochure will convert to its captions and text only. If you also need the pictures, use PDF to JPG with Extract images and link them into your notes yourself.

Why convert PDFs to Markdown?

  • Notes and knowledge bases. Drop the file into an Obsidian vault or import it into Notion, and the headings become a navigable outline you can link to, search and annotate.
  • Documentation and Git. Markdown is the native format of README files, wikis and static documentation sites. As plain text, changes to it show up line by line in a diff, unlike a binary PDF.
  • AI assistants and LLMs. Pasting a clean Markdown version of a document into a chat assistant, or feeding it to a language model pipeline, keeps headings and tables recognisable while dropping layout noise. Text without repeated line breaks and broken words is also more compact, so more of a long document fits into the model's context.
  • Reuse anywhere. Markdown converts easily to HTML, Word or slides with common tools, so it is a handy neutral format for text you plan to rework.

Getting the best result

The converter works from the text and font information inside the PDF. Documents with a clear hierarchy, such as reports, manuals, papers and contracts, convert best, because heading sizes stand out from body text. If every line in a PDF is the same size, the output will be mostly paragraphs, which you can tidy by adding a few # marks.

A scanned PDF contains pictures of text, so there is nothing to convert. Run it through OCR PDF first. If you'd rather keep rich formatting such as fonts, colours and images in place, PDF to Word is the better fit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF to Markdown converter free?

Yes. Convert up to 10 files and 50 MB per task, 5 tasks a day, with no signup. Pro ($5 a month or $50 a year) allows 50 files and 500 MB per task, unlimited tasks under fair use, and no ads.

Does the Markdown include images?

No. The output is text only: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables and bold text. To get the pictures, use PDF to JPG in Extract images mode and link them into your Markdown.

How are headings detected?

From font sizes. Text set noticeably larger than the body text becomes a #, ## or ### heading depending on its size, so the outline of the document is kept.

Are tables converted?

Yes. Tables are written as Markdown pipe tables, which render as real tables in Obsidian, GitHub, GitLab, most documentation tools and many other Markdown editors.

Can I use the output with ChatGPT, Claude or other AI tools?

Yes. Clean Markdown keeps the structure of a document while dropping layout noise, which makes it easy to paste into an AI assistant or feed into a language model workflow.

Does it work with Obsidian and Notion?

Yes. Put the .md file into your Obsidian vault, or import it in Notion as a Markdown file, and the headings, lists and tables come through as structure.

Why is my Markdown file empty?

The PDF is probably a scan, which contains images of text rather than characters. Run it through OCR PDF first, then convert the result to Markdown.

Are my documents kept private?

Yes. Your PDF and the Markdown made from it are only used to perform the conversion. They are uploaded over HTTPS, kept in private storage, never shared or reused, and deleted one hour after your last action, or straight away with Delete my files now.
