If you've ever merged PDFs and noticed that the result looks softer, that text can no longer be selected, or that the file suddenly became much smaller, the tool you used probably re-rendered the pages. Some converters "print" each page again, turn pages into images, or squeeze embedded photos with heavy compression to save bandwidth. That's fine for a quick preview but bad for anything you'll print, archive or submit.

S-PDF takes the opposite approach. Each page — with its text, fonts, vector drawings and images — is copied into the new document unchanged. Nothing is decoded and re-encoded, so there's simply no step where quality could be lost.

How to merge PDFs and keep full quality

  1. Upload the original files Use the original PDFs rather than screenshots, photos of screens or files that were already "printed to PDF" from a viewer.
  2. Order and select pages Drag files into place and set page ranges if needed. Page ranges remove pages without touching the others.
  3. Merge Pages are copied as-is. Most merges finish in a few seconds, even with hundreds of pages.
  4. Check the result Open Preview and zoom in on a detailed area — it should look identical to the source file.

What "lossless" covers

  • Text layer: text stays selectable and searchable, and screen readers can still read it.
  • Fonts: embedded fonts travel with the page, so layout doesn't shift.
  • Vector graphics: charts, logos and CAD drawings stay infinitely sharp when you zoom.
  • Images: photos and scans keep their original pixels and compression.
  • Page geometry: each page keeps its size, crop box and rotation.
  • Links: clickable links placed on pages keep working.

Two things aren't merged: the bookmarks panel from each source file, and passwords. If a file is password-protected, unlock it first so it can be read.

Images you add are lossless too

When you add a JPG, the image data is placed inside the PDF exactly as it was — the same bytes, not a re-saved copy. PNG and WebP images are stored with lossless compression. The only exception is a phone photo that needs rotating according to its orientation tag; that one is re-saved at very high quality (93%) so it appears upright.

Why some merged PDFs get blurry

Quality usually drops for one of three reasons. First, the tool rasterises pages — converts them to pictures — which kills the text layer and softens small type. Second, it re-compresses images to make the output smaller, which adds blocky artefacts to scans and photos. Third, the files were already low quality: a phone photo of a printed page will never look like the original digital PDF. If your merged file looks worse than your source files, check the sources first, then make sure the merger doesn't advertise "compression" as part of merging.

Need a smaller file instead? Shrinking a PDF always involves some trade-off. Do it as a separate, deliberate step after merging, so you control how much quality you give up.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging PDFs reduce quality?

Not with a lossless merger. Pages are copied without being re-rendered, so the merged PDF has exactly the same quality as your original files.

Why is my merged file the same size as the originals combined?

Because nothing was compressed. That's the sign of a lossless merge. It can be slightly smaller when files share fonts or images that only need to be stored once.

Will scanned documents stay readable?

Yes. Scans keep their original resolution. If a scan was blurry to begin with, merging won't make it worse — or better.

Is text still searchable after merging?

Yes. The text layer is copied with each page, so you can search, select and copy text in the merged PDF. Scans without OCR have no text layer to begin with.

Are hyperlinks preserved?

Links placed on the pages, such as web addresses and email links, keep working. Links that jumped to bookmarks in another file may no longer point anywhere useful.

Is lossless merging slower?

It's actually faster, because pages don't need to be drawn again. Large documents usually merge in a few seconds.
